John Wesley Bowers was born on his family’s farm in Guernsey County, Ohio on November 13, 1839. He was the seventh of twelve children born to John Wesley and Sarah Jane (McPeek) Bowers. In 1845 his family moved to Washington County, Ohio and settled on a farm in Liberty Township, where John would grow up.
