DORAL, Fla. (WFLA) — Two people were killed and seven others were injured in a mass shooting at a Florida mall Saturday morning, according to police.
WTVJ reported that the shooting happened at about 3:30 a.m. at Martini Bar in CityPlace Doral.
Police said a dispute at the bar turned deadly when a security guard tried to intervene, only for a gunman to gun him down. Six other bystanders, two women and four men, were also injured in the chaos, according to WTVJ.
Doral police Chief Edwin Lopez said an officer was also injured in a shootout with the suspect, which ended in the suspect’s death. Another officer also opened fire in the shootout but was not injured.
“The one who was struck, with four years of service, applied a tourniquet on himself immediately after being struck even after he discharged his firearm,” the chief said.
Two of the victims were said to be in critical condition. The officer was stable and released from a hospital after being treated, police said.
Doral Mayor Christi Fraga released a statement early Saturday:
“Thanks to the extensive training our officers have received in the past year, including active shooter training at this very establishment, our officers and personnel from other agencies responded promptly and effectively. Regrettably, multiple patrons sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and individuals affected by this terrible incident. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the police officers who swiftly responded to the call.”
