Poland has detained a Russian archaeologist at Ukraine’s request, accusing him of conducting illegal excavations in annexed Crimea.
Butyagin was arrested and questioned in Warsaw while traveling from the Netherlands, where he had been giving a series of lectures. Kyiv is seeking his extradition, alleging he destroyed cultural heritage sites in occupied Crimea.
Ukrainian prosecutors say he carried out unauthorized excavations at a protected archaeological site in Kerch.
According to the investigation, after Russia’s annexation of Crimea, Butyagin, as head of the archaeological expedition, conducted digs at the “Ancient City of Myrmekion” without any permits from Ukrainian authorities.
Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office stated that his actions “amount to the destruction of a protected national heritage site.”
According to RMF FM, Ukraine will pursue the Russian scholar’s extradition.
