Jewish leaders have told Australia’s Royal Commission into Antisemitism that some synagogues have been forced to cancel Friday night services because they could not afford to hire security guards, while others have diverted substantial funds from community activities to cover growing security costs.
Counsel assisting the commission, Richard Lancaster, said submissions from synagogues across Australia showed that enormous amounts of time, money and resources are now being devoted to security. He said Jewish institutions face a dilemma: either increase security and risk being viewed as isolated, or remain more open and leave worshippers exposed.
Lancaster told the commission that no other religious community in Australia bears comparable security costs simply to attend school or religious services.
The Community Security Group (CSG) Victoria reported a sharp increase in antisemitic incidents since October 7, 2023. A senior CSG representative said volunteers contributed more than 113,700 hours of security and administrative work in 2025 alone to protect Jewish institutions.
Another CSG volunteer told the commission the psychological toll has been severe, saying years of dealing with threats had left many volunteers desensitized. He revealed he had personally contributed around 8,400 hours over the past five years, including 3,500 documented volunteer hours and 1,500 hours of unpaid work, warning that asking volunteers to effectively work two full-time jobs is “not sustainable.”
Former Australian Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus urged the government to consider buffer zones around synagogues and Jewish schools. He said the aim would not be to ban political protest but to prevent demonstrations that can serve as cover for intimidation, violence or physical threats targeting Australia’s Jewish community.
