Austrian security investigators said around €2 million flowed from Qatar in 2015 through the Doha-based Qatar Charity to an Austrian association, Liga Kultur, which is regarded as a central branch of the Muslim Brotherhood in Austria. Investigators said the Qatari organization supported mosques, cultural centers and schools connected to Muslim Brotherhood networks.
Investigators also suspected a €13 million mosque project in Graz may have been partly financed with Muslim Brotherhood-linked money from Qatar or Kuwait.
Leaked Qatar Papers revealed that Austria’s official Islamic religious leadership sent the Qatari Embassy in Vienna a recommendation seeking Qatari financial support for the organization behind Vienna’s Hidaya Mosque, which is operated by an association linked to the Muslim Brotherhood.
The Muslim Brotherhood is banned in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Egypt but has received state support in Turkey and Qatar.
