Abdelhadi is a sociologist and assistant professor at the University of Chicago, whose academic work focuses on American Muslim communities, gender, sexuality, politics and religion. She is Palestinian-Egyptian American; her mother is Egyptian and her father was Palestinian.
Later on October 7, after Sen. Bernie Sanders condemned Hamas’s attack, Abdelhadi criticized him, writing:
“What a disappointment. If you can’t stand with a ppl that have been held in an open prison for 16 years finally fighting their oppressors, how can you claim to stand for justice?”
Abdelhadi has described herself as El-Sayed’s “proud little sister” and publicly promoted his U.S. Senate campaign in 2025.
She has also been active in pro-Palestinian organizing at the University of Chicago and has been involved with Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine and Scholars for Social Justice.
In October 2025, Abdelhadi was arrested during an anti-ICE protest in Broadview, Illinois. She was subsequently charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery against a government employee and two misdemeanor counts of resisting or obstructing an officer, after she spat on Illinois state troopers.
