Lewisham Council, led by Green Party Mayor Liam Shrivastava, has become the first local authority in the UK to formally refuse to assist Home Office immigration enforcement operations targeting illegal migrants.
A motion passed by the council pledges not to use council staff, resources, or public money to support immigration raids. It also commits to reviewing data-sharing agreements with the government to create a “firewall” between council services and immigration enforcement.
The council also voted to work with Lewisham Anti-Raids, an activist group that organizes what it calls “mass community resistance” to immigration enforcement. The group encourages supporters to surround Home Office vans, challenge enforcement officers, help migrants evade arrest, physically block detention vehicles, and continue resisting from inside detention centers.
Lewisham Anti-Raids has also shared artwork depicting a Home Office immigration van on fire with smashed windows alongside the word “Resist.”
The motion was introduced by Green councilor Hau-Yu Tam, who previously referred to David Lammy and Priti Patel as “coconuts,” a derogatory term used against ethnic minorities accused of betraying their heritage. She also posted previously on X that “Zionism is undoubtedly, unquestionably the Nazism of our time.”
Lewisham now plans to work with Lambeth and other Green-led councils to create a London “sanctuary corridor” opposing immigration raids.
